Anima (Reihe)

Die Idee zu Anima stammt von Jakob Hütter: eine audiovisuelle Fassadenprojektion auf einen Gemeindebau im 20. Bezirk, dort, wo Hand mit Auge sein Studio hat. Entwickelt wurde das Format dann von Hand mit Auge gemeinsam mit dem Komponisten Jakob Schauer.

Anima ging aus einer längeren Zusammenarbeit mit dem kommunalen Wohnbau hervor: 2018 projizierte Hand mit Auge für „Wiener Teppich” Fotografien auf eine Fassade im Karl-Wrba-Hof (Initialkontakt: Wolfgang Schlögl / iwolf); 2019 folgte mit „Rote Alpen” eine größere Fassadenprojektion, während der Pandemie als begehbare Online-Räume „rotealpen.com” (Mozilla Hubs), beauftragt von Arno Rabl / Kulturlabor Gemeindebau (wohnpartner).

Jede Ausgabe entsteht in einem anderen Bezirk (20, 22, 11) — bewusst vor allem in den Randbezirken: Ziel ist, in jede Ecke Wiens eine audiovisuelle Fassadenprojektion zu bringen, entwickelt aus dem jeweiligen Ort und unter Partizipation der Gemeindebau-Bewohner:innen.

The idea for Anima came from Jakob Hütter: an audiovisual façade projection onto a municipal housing estate in Vienna’s 20th district, where Hand mit Auge has its studio. The format was then developed by Hand mit Auge together with composer Jakob Schauer.

Anima grew out of a longer collaboration with the city’s social housing: in 2018, for „Wiener Teppich”, Hand mit Auge projected photographs onto a façade at the Karl-Wrba-Hof (initial contact: Wolfgang Schlögl / iwolf); in 2019, „Rote Alpen” followed as a larger façade projection, and during the pandemic as walk-in online rooms „rotealpen.com” (Mozilla Hubs), commissioned by Arno Rabl / Kulturlabor Gemeindebau (wohnpartner).

Each edition takes place in a different district (20, 22, 11) — deliberately in the outer districts above all: to bring an audiovisual façade projection into every corner of Vienna, developed from the specific site and with the participation of the Gemeindebau residents.

Anima Gemeindebau — Friedrich-Engels-Platz, Wien 20 (2022)

Die erste Ausgabe bespielte 2022 den Gemeindebau am Friedrich-Engels-Platz im 20. Bezirk mit drei Projektoren. In die Klangkulisse wurden Interviews mit Bewohner:innen eingearbeitet — der Ort und seine Menschen wurden so selbst zum Material der Projektion.

Anima Gemeindebau — Friedrich-Engels-Platz, Vienna 20 (2022)

The first edition lit the estate at Friedrich-Engels-Platz in Vienna’s 20th district with three projectors in 2022. Interviews with residents were woven into the soundscape — the site and its people became the material of the projection itself.

Anima Rennbahnweg — Wien 22 (2023)

Die zweite Ausgabe am Rennbahnweg im 22. Bezirk arbeitete mit einer veränderten Interaktionsbasis und einem perspektivischen Eck der Anlage. Grundlage war ein umfangreiches Rechercheprojekt: ein Buch über den Rennbahnweg mit Interviews, Fotos und Plänen, Gesprächen mit Anrainer:innen und dem über 90-jährigen Architekten der Anlage. Für diese Ausgabe holte Jakob Hütter Wolfgang Schlögl — den Initialkontakt von Wiener Teppich — wieder hinzu, gemeinsam mit Jakob Schauer und dem Gemeindebauchor.

Anima Rennbahnweg — Vienna 22 (2023)

The second edition at Rennbahnweg in Vienna’s 22nd district used a changed interaction base and a perspectival corner of the complex. It was grounded in an extensive research project: a book on Rennbahnweg with interviews, photographs and plans, conversations with residents and with the estate’s architect, then over 90. For this edition Jakob Hütter brought back Wolfgang Schlögl — the original Wiener Teppich contact — together with Jakob Schauer and the Gemeindebau choir.

Anima 11 — Thürnlhofstraße, Wien 11 / Simmering (2025)

Die dritte Ausgabe bespielte am 4. April 2025 die Wohnhausanlage Thürnlhofstraße in Simmering (errichtet 1972, benannt nach dem Thürnlhof in Kaiserebersdorf). Erstmals wurde das Format um Tanz erweitert: Die erste Hälfte folgte dem Zusammenspiel aus Mapping und Klang, die zweite band eine Tanzperformance des The Here & Now Collective Vienna ein, an der Bewohner:innen über offene Tanzworkshops teilnehmen konnten. Über 400 Besucher:innen kamen; die Wiener Kulturstadträtin Veronica Kaup-Hasler würdigte die Projektion als Lebenszeichen der Kultur auch am Stadtrand. Eine weitere Ausgabe ist für 2027 geplant.

Anima 11 — Thürnlhofstraße, Vienna 11 / Simmering (2025)

The third edition lit the Thürnlhofstraße estate in Simmering (built 1972, named after the Thürnlhof in Kaiserebersdorf) on 4 April 2025. For the first time the format was extended with dance: the first half followed the interplay of mapping and sound, the second incorporated a dance performance by The Here & Now Collective Vienna, which residents could join via open dance workshops. More than 400 people attended; Vienna’s city councillor for culture, Veronica Kaup-Hasler, described the projection as a sign of cultural life even at the city’s edge. A further edition is planned for 2027.
